Biography

Dr. El Smaily received his PhD in Mathematics from Aix-Marseille Université (France) in 2008. Before moving to faculty positions in 2014, he had a PIMS postdoctoral position at the University of British Columbia, a postdoc at Carnegie Mellon University and an NSERC postdoctoral position at the University of Toronto.

Research and Expertise

Dr. El Smaily’s research interests lie primarily in partial differential equations (PDE) and nonlinear analysis. Part of his work focusses on the analysis reaction-diffusion PDE, which arise from population dynamics, mixing and dispersal in heterogeneous frameworks for instance. A rigorous analysis of these models requires tools from functional analysis, elliptic/parabolic PDE theory and spectral analysis. Other interests lie in integro-differential equations, which can be studied using analytic methods that are analogous to those used in nonlinear parabolic and parabolic PDE. More details can be found on his publications list.
