Third Star: #8 Devin McMurtry, UNBC (Basketball)

Fifth-year forward Devin McMurtry was instrumental in the UNBC men’s basketball teams’ double win over the Mount Royal Cougars last weekend. McMurtry pulled in a career-high 17 rebounds and narrowly missed out on a double-double with eight points on the first night. The forward’s tenacity was a contributing factor to the Timberwolves’ 92-85 win over the Cougars, moving the Timberwolves from fourth in the standings to tying with the Cougars for third.

On Saturday night, McMurtry continued to dominate the boards, pulling in 16 rebounds, giving him a total of 31 rebounds on the weekend. The big man added 15 points, going a perfect 7-of-7 from the field. In the fourth quarter, McMurtry netted nine of his 15 points, including one massive dunk, to help keep the Timberwolves’ edge over the Cougars. McMurtry’s impressive performance was again a huge part of the Timberwolves’ 76-64 win the second night.

With two wins under their belt, the UNBC Timberwolves bump the MRU Cougars down to fourth while the Timberwolves slide into third. The Timberwolves now sit in a good spot to make their first ever post-season appearance since joining Canada West, as the third place team in the Explorer division for the last playoff spot, and they hold the tie-breaker with the fourth place team, winning the series with the MRU Cougars 3-1.
